Possessive adjectives

Intro

Possessive adjectives in Coptic are made from two parts; The first letter describes the possessed object and the second part (which can be one or more letters) describes the owner.
In this lesson we will divide the possessive adjectives depending on the possessed object: masculine singular, feminine singular and plural.

Masculine singular

When the possessed object is masculine singular (such as the word “father – ⲓⲱⲧ” the possessive adjective always starts with . The second part of the possessive object describes on the owner and is conjugated as follows:

ⲓⲱⲧ my father
ⲉⲕⲓⲱⲧ your (m sing) father
ⲓⲱⲧ your (f sing) father
ⲉϥⲓⲱⲧ his father
ⲉⲥⲓⲱⲧ her father
ⲉⲛⲓⲱⲧ our father
ⲉⲧⲉⲛⲓⲱⲧ your (pl) father
ⲟⲩⲓⲱⲧ their father

Femⲓnine singular

When the possessed object is feminine singular (such as the word “mother – ⲙⲁⲩ” the possessive adjective always starts with . The second part of the possessive object describes on the owner and is conjugated as follows:

ⲙⲁⲩ my mother
ⲉⲕⲙⲁⲩ your (m sing) mother
ⲙⲁⲩ your (f sing) mother
ⲉϥⲙⲁⲩ his mother
ⲉⲥⲙⲁⲩ her mother
ⲉⲛⲙⲁⲩ our mother
ⲉⲧⲉⲛⲙⲁⲩ your (pl) mother
ⲟⲩⲙⲁⲩ their mother

Plural

When the possessed object is plural (whether masculine or feminine, such as the word “book – ϫⲱⲙ” the possessive adjective always starts with . The second part of the possessive object describes on the owner and is conjugated as follows:

ϫⲱⲙ my books
ⲉⲕϫⲱⲙ your (m sing) books
ϫⲱⲙ your (f sing) books
ⲉϥϫⲱⲙ his books
ⲉⲥϫⲱⲙ her books
ⲉⲛϫⲱⲙ our books
ⲉⲧⲉⲛϫⲱⲙ your (pl) books
ⲟⲩϫⲱⲙ their books
