Possessive adjectives

Intro

Possessive adjectives in Coptic are made from two parts; The first letter describes the possessed object and the second part (which can be one or more letters) describes the owner.
In this lesson we will divide the possessive adjectives depending on the possessed object: masculine singular, feminine singular and plural.

Masculine singular ⲡ

When the possessed object is masculine singular (such as the word “father – ⲓⲱⲧ” the possessive adjective always starts with ⲡ. The second part of the possessive object describes on the owner and is conjugated as follows:

ⲡⲁⲓⲱⲧ my father
ⲡⲉⲕⲓⲱⲧ your (m sing) father
ⲡⲉⲓⲱⲧ your (f sing) father
ⲡⲉϥⲓⲱⲧ his father
ⲡⲉⲥⲓⲱⲧ her father
ⲡⲉⲛⲓⲱⲧ our father
ⲡⲉⲧⲉⲛⲓⲱⲧ your (pl) father
ⲡⲟⲩⲓⲱⲧ their father

Femⲓnine singular ⲧ

When the possessed object is feminine singular (such as the word “mother – ⲙⲁⲩ” the possessive adjective always starts with ⲧ. The second part of the possessive object describes on the owner and is conjugated as follows:

ⲧⲁⲙⲁⲩ my mother
ⲧⲉⲕⲙⲁⲩ your (m sing) mother
ⲧⲉⲙⲁⲩ your (f sing) mother
ⲧⲉϥⲙⲁⲩ his mother
ⲧⲉⲥⲙⲁⲩ her mother
ⲧⲉⲛⲙⲁⲩ our mother
ⲧⲉⲧⲉⲛⲙⲁⲩ your (pl) mother
ⲧⲟⲩⲙⲁⲩ their mother

Plural ⲛ

When the possessed object is plural (whether masculine or feminine, such as the word “book – ϫⲱⲙ” the possessive adjective always starts with ⲛ. The second part of the possessive object describes on the owner and is conjugated as follows:

ⲛⲁϫⲱⲙ my books
ⲛⲉⲕϫⲱⲙ your (m sing) books
ⲛⲉϫⲱⲙ your (f sing) books
ⲛⲉϥϫⲱⲙ his books
ⲛⲉⲥϫⲱⲙ her books
ⲛⲉⲛϫⲱⲙ our books
ⲛⲉⲧⲉⲛϫⲱⲙ your (pl) books
ⲛⲟⲩϫⲱⲙ their books
