Coptic for All

Level 2: Lesson 7

Adjectives and association

Adjectives

Adjectives in Coptic can be formed in a few ways:

1- Attaching an article to the beginning of the adjective word.
The article ⲙ̀ is used if the adjective starts with one of these letters ( ⲃ ⲙ ⲡ ⲫ ⲯ ) The article ⲛ̀ is used if the adjective starts with any other letter – examples:
+ Ⲡⲓϣⲏⲣⲓ ⲙ̀ⲙⲟⲛⲟⲅⲉⲛⲏⲥ = The only begotten Son
+ Ⲡⲉⲕⲓⲱⲧ ⲛ̀ⲁⲅⲁⲑⲟⲥ = Your good Father

💡 Please note that in this case the adjective and the word it describes can swap places – eample:
ϯϣⲟⲩⲣⲏ ⲛ̀ⲛⲟⲩⲃ = the golden senser = ϯⲛⲟⲩⲃ ⲛ̀ϣⲟⲩⲣⲏ

2- Using definite articles to define the adjective – examples:
+ Ⲡ̀ϭⲟⲓⲥ Ⲫ̀ⲛⲟⲩϯ = Lord (the) God
+ Ⲅⲉⲱⲣⲅⲓⲟⲥ ⲡⲓⲙⲁⲣⲧⲩⲣⲟⲥ = George (the) martyr

3- Using the article ϧⲁ with a personal pronoun – examples:
+ Ⲁⲛⲟⲛ ϧⲁ ⲛⲓⲭⲣⲓⲥⲧⲓⲁⲛⲟⲥ = We, the Christians
+ Ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ϧⲁ ⲡⲓⲣⲉϥⲉⲣⲛⲟⲃⲓ = I, the sinner

Association

We can associate Coptic words in two ways (Where in English you can just use the word “of”)

1- Using the word ⲛ̀ⲧⲉ = of . examples:
+ Ⲡ̀ϣⲏⲣⲓ ⲛ̀ⲧⲉ Ⲫ̀ⲛⲟⲩϯ = The Son of God
+ ⲡⲓⲭ̀ⲗⲟⲙ ⲛ̀ⲧⲉ ϯⲣⲟⲙⲡⲓ = the crown of the year

2- Attaching an article to the beginning of the associated word.
The article ⲙ̀ is used if the word starts with one of these letters ( ⲃ ⲙ ⲡ ⲫ ⲯ ) The article ⲛ̀ is used if the word starts with any other letter – examples:
+ Ⲡ̀ϣⲏⲣⲓ ⲙ̀Ⲫ̀ⲛⲟⲩϯ = The Son of God
+ ⲑ̀ⲙⲁⲩ ⲛ̀Ⲓⲏⲥⲟⲩⲥ = The mother of Jesus
